NEGLECT

Sam Beasley

I have always had a connection with the environment. While in college, that connection developed into a project that

centers around human neglect for the natural world and the consequences that are right on our horizon.

To depict this, I chose to work with ceramics. Clay comes from the Earth so it seemed an appropriate medium. I wanted a pot that could represent our environment and so I studied pot forms, glaze combinations, and numerous ceramic techniques such as nerikomi, a Japanese marbling technique.

I decided on a grecian type form pictured to the right. It stands tall and regal and represents something worth keeping and valuing. It is something you wouldn't want to destroy; much like our environment.

Colors are pulled from nature. Reds, yellows, and greens are reminiscent of leaves as they change seasonally. Browns represent earth, whites represent the air, and blues represent water.

To show that humans are a large part of environmental neglect, I chose to break my pot and show the remains as a possible outcome for our world if we continue to live unsustainably.
