I AM SPECIAL COSMETICS

Emily Pruitt

I have always had a desire to help others and a longing to create a lasting impact on society.  For this body of work, I knew that I wanted to accomplish that.  I settled upon the mediums of graphic design and photography, a combination of my strongest and most applicable mediums to my projected career path because I knew I would be able to portray the strongest message with them.

After examining various political hot topics including female empowerment, sexual violence, human trafficking, and animal abuse, I settled upon one that is very close to my heart.  Autism.

People with disabilities are often overlooked, mistreated, and viewed as less than a person.  Few opportunities exist in which uplift and enhance their strengths and personalities, and they are often overlooked or excluded within society.  Many of these adults and children do understand that they are different, but long to feel the same as everyone else.  They have the same human desires to fit in, succeed in life, and to be loved as we all do.  It is even worse for females struggling with disabilities as they are often further ostracized because of their gender.

In an effort to bridge the gap of exclusion and mistreatment of women and girls with disabilities, I created I Am Special Cosmetics.  This brand seeks to promote awareness and inclusion of women and girls with special needs.  Each product entails a different image I took during a photoshoot with girls with disabilities and Furman students.  I aimed to capture the emotions of the girls, showing that while they may be different from the Furman students in many ways, they are also just girls who want to live life, laugh, and have fun.  The brand is centered around key words that are empowering and uplifting that would make millennial girls with disabilities or not feel encouraged and uplifted.  We all deserve to feel beautiful regardless of what holds us back.
